Adam McKay spoke out about how his former friendship with Will Ferrell, and shared why it ended while making the HBO series Winning Time.
McKay and Ferrell have collaborated on countless iconic projects over the years, including Talladega Nights, Step Brothers and Anchorman. The making of Winning Time led to a rift between the pair, as there were rumors that Ferrell wanted to play the role of the majority owner, Jerry Buss, and it was ultimately given to John C. Reilly. Ferrell's Step Brothers co-star saw this as the "perfect opportunity" but "felt obligated to give Ferrell a heads up," according to E! News.
McKay admits that he:
"f--ked up' and said, "Will was very hurt that I wasn't the one to call him, and I should have."
Reilly says he is remaining neutral at this time:
"Will is one of my best friends, Adam is one of my best friends, I was delighted to get the job and that's all I really have to say."
McKay and Ferrell's decision to go separate ways may have added fuel to this fire.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ferrell said:
"Adam was like, ‘I want to do this, and this, and this; he wanted growth and a sphere of influence, and I was just like, ‘I don't know, that sounds like a lot that I have to keep track of."
He added:
‘Oh, we're producing that?' I don't know. … At the end of the day, we just have different amounts of bandwidth."
Will the two ever rekindle their friendship and create more iconic movies together?
