Over half of Americans think the GOP is doing too much to limit abortion, including more than one-third of Republican voters.
53 percent of respondents said that the Republican party is "doing too much" to limit abortion in a new poll from NewsNation Decision Desk HQ, via The Hill. 25 percent said that the party is "taking the right approach," whereas 14 percent said they are unsure, and 7 percent said that the GOP is "doing too little" to restrict the procedure.
Democrats were significantly more likely to say that Republicans' abortion restrictions go too far, with 75 percent in agreement. Just 9 percent said they were doing the right thing, and 6 percent said the party should do more.
Among Republicans, 30 percent disagreed with how far their party's measures go, whereas only 45 percent said that they are doing the right thing. Just 9 percent said they were doing too little.
Abortion laws create confusion
Women were more likely than men to disagree with Republicans' abortions restrictions. 59 percent said the party is going too far, of which 49 percent of men agreed. Younger voters also were more likely to oppose the bans, with about 55 percent of those 18 to 34 agreeing the GOP has gone too far.
More than half of voters across ages also agreed, 52 percent of those ages 35 to 55 and 53 percent of those older than 55 saying the same.
Abortion was a key issue in the 2023 midterm elections, as a measure to enshrine protections for the procedure in the Ohio state constitution passed in a referendum vote. Voters also denied Virginia Republicans the legislative majorities they craved, thwarting Gov. Glenn Youngkin's proposed 15-week abortion ban.
