Justine Bieber and country pop duo Dan + Shay are facing a new copyright infringement lawsuit over their 2019 song "10,000 Hours."

According to court documents, a lawsuit has been filed against the musical trio who worked together on the Grammy-winning hit single "10,000 Hours." A company called Melomega has accused the musicians of stealing the "core portion" of the song from a 2014 single called "The First Time Baby Is a Holiday."

In the complaint that was filed at a Los Angeles federal court, the company states,

"Defendants' theft is impudently bold.One need only listen to ‘First Time' and the infringing ‘10,000 Hours' to discern the unmistakable similarities between the songs."

Additionally, Melomega also included a report from musicologist Dr. Alexander Stewart. According to the lawsuit, Stewart evaluated the two singles and arrived at the "universal and ineluctable conclusion that Defendants stole Plaintiff's song."

"'10,000 Hours' is not just substantially similar to ‘First Time,'" the complaint stated. "Defendants copied, in minute detail, the most important, core portion of plaintiff's song, which includes the chorus, verse and hook. The similarities are so striking that ‘10,000 Hours' simply cannot have been independently created."

Palmer Rakes and Frank Fioravanti, who formed Melomega, reportedly wrote "First Time" and registered their musical composition for it with the U.S. Copyright Office back in 1980. However, it was not until more than 30 years later in 2014 that the recording was released.

After releasing "10,000 Hours" in 2019, Justin Bieber, and Dan+Shay earned numerous awards for the single including a Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, two American Music Awards, a Billboard Music Award and an iHeartRadio Music Award.
